By Dr. Joyce M. Woods

Dr. Joyce Woods worked as a medical/surgical nurse, public health nurse, nurse educator, nursing school administrator, occupational health consultant. She holds Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Arts (Specialist), Master of Education degrees, and has completed her doctoral degree in the area of “Indoor Air Pollution, and …it’s effect on your health”

  1. Begin by thinking of your home as a toxic waste dump. The average home today contains 62 toxic chemicals – more than a chemistry lab at the turn of the century.
  2. More than 72,000 synthetic chemicals have been produced since WW II.
  3. Less than 2% of synthetic chemicals have been tested for toxicity, mutagenic, carcinogenic, or birth defects.
  4. The majority of chemicals have never been tested for long-term effects.
  5. An EPA survey concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air.
  6. Another EPA study stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air.
  7. CMHC reports that houses today are so energy efficient that “outgassing” of chemicals has no where to go, so it builds up inside the home.
  8. We spend 90% of our time indoor, and 65% of our time at home. Moms, infants and the elderly spend 90% of their time in the home.
  9. National Cancer Association released results of a 15 year study concluding that women who work in the home are at a 54% higher risk of developing cancer than women who work outside the home.
  10. Cancer rates have almost doubled since 1960.
  11. Cancer is the Number ONE cause of death for children.
  12. There has been a 26% increase in breast cancer since 1982. Breast cancer is the Number ONE killer of women between the ages of 35 and 54. Primary suspects are laundry detergents, household cleaners and pesticides.
  13. There has been a call from the U.S./ Canadian Commission to ban bleach in North America. Bleach is being linked to the rising rates of breast cancer in women, reproductive problems in men and learning and behavioral problems in children.
  14. Chemicals get into our body through inhalation, ingestion and absorption.
  15. We breathe 10 to 20 thousand liters of air per day.
  16. There are more than 3 million poisonings every year. Household cleaners are the Number ONE cause of poisoning of children.
  17. Since 1980, asthma has increased by 600%. The Canadian Lung Association and Asthma Society of Canada identify common household cleaners and cosmetics as triggers.
  18. ADD/ADHD are epidemic in schools today. Behavioral problems have long been linked to exposure to toxic chemicals and molds. Use of Ritalin has skyrocketed since 1990.
  19. Chemical and environmental sensitivities are known to cause all types of headaches.
  20. Labeling laws do not protect the consumer – they protect big business.
  21. The New York Poison Control Center reports that 85% of product warning labels were either inadequate or incorrect for identifying a poison, and for first aid instructions.
  22. Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, xylene are found in common household cleaners, cosmetics, beverages, fabrics and cigarette smoke. These chemicals are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system.
  23. Chemicals are attracted to, and stored in fatty tissue. The brain is a prime target for these destructive organics because of its high fat content and very rich blood supply.
  24. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found more than 2500 chemicals in cosmetics that are toxic, cause tumors, reproductive complications, biological mutations and skin and eye irritations.
  25. Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, circulatory disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and hormonal problems are diseases commonly related to chemical exposure.
  26. Pesticides only have to include active ingredients on the labels, even though the inert (inactive) ingredients may account for 99%, many of which are toxic and poisons.

More facts from Indoor Air Pollution Seminar held on October 23rd, 1999.Our homes should have a complete change of air 3 or 4 time a day. New homes are built so air tight that it is impossible to get a complete change of air. We should leave our windows open on each side of our house for better cross ventilation!  Top three culprits of children incidents- Household cleaners, bleach and medications. n the USA the #1 cause of accidental poisoning is Dawn Dishwashing detergent WHY? Because it is the #1 seller.

Tide contains Lye and is the #1 polluter and it is also the #1 seller. Deep Woods Off has an ingredient called DEET. DEET causes seizures in children and adults. Why can they

produce products with such harsh chemical’s: They are protected by trade secret laws!

In the work place Material Safety Data Sheets must accompany any product used. When these same chemicals used our brought into our homes they are not.

The ideal rate of humidity is between 35% and 45%. Anything higher causes mold.

When we use humidifiers or dehumidifiers with standing water we are encouraging mold growth with the standing water.

The ideal temperature in the home is between 68 degrees and 72 degrees, anything higher makes chemicals more active.

When we shower, the hot water combined with the chlorine in the water, can cause major headaches.

Using aerosols causes dizziness.

Steam from our dryer vents is extremely toxic, because of the chemicals from dryer sheets and residue from laundry soap and bleach.

Chemicals used to dry clean clothing are very dangerous and can cause cancer. When you bring dry cleaning home, you should hang it outside for at least 3 days.

Dry-cleaning chemicals are the same cancer causing chemicals that are found in mothballs.

There are 4700 chemicals in tobacco smoke.

Chemicals from carpets and plastic have been found to cause kidney and liver damage.

Hi Everyone,
Please read, “The Body Toxic” by Nena Baker. The factual data and stats are incredible.  You will never use a shelf product including cleaning, personal bath and body and makeup which all contain formaldehyde on the shelf.  Stay away from nitrate sodium, microwave popcorn (even Orville Redenbacher’s), and Teflon pans and please do not use Scott’s Fertilizer on your grass-there are green fertilizer’s you can use it’s getting into our water supply and killing our marine life!!!! Read the book it’s all in there. Nena was an investigative reporter working for the New York Times, quit her job after writing one article on “Toxic Awareness” and took three years to write this book…She will tell you.

“The first problem is “the data Gap,” the lack of comprehensive toxicity information because chemical producers have not been required to generate and disclose it.” “The second  is the “safety gap”, the difficulty of controlling hazardous chemicals because of the lack of data and ineffectual regulatory tools” and the third problem is the “technology gap”, the creation of market conditions that favor existing chemicals and defer the development of cleaner, safer and sustainable products”….Read the book!

According to present government stat’s, one out of every six persons in our population will die of cancer…this is unacceptable….

A new book I am reading by Dr. Max Gerson who is famous for his research on fighting cancer and wrote a book called “A Cancer Therapy”.  I love this quote he wrote:  “We will again need real housewives, not eager to save the kitchen and cleaning time, but homemakers needed to devote their lives to the benefit of all, especially the task of developing and maintaining a healthy family.”

If your doctor told you she had a new drug that would prolong your life, reduce your chance of death from all causes by 50-70%, improve your quality of sleep, and improve your ability to manage stress and increase your life expectancy, would you take it?

The only catch is it takes about 15-30 minutes a day to “swallow”.

“45% of all deaths in the U.S. are attributed to diet and obesity”

My daughter came home from a party (a door prize)with a little bottle of Darling U “white cotton” shower gel-real cute little bottle I was fine with it till I looked at the back of the bottle and saw a long ingredient listed called: methylchloroisothiazolin . I went under www.Google.com and found this report.  My daughter is only (11) imagine over time using this product-what it could have done to her… I am glad I have become fluent about personal use products, because I am a Mom and I don’t want to hurt my children, my friends and my family.  Also, this is why I e-mail information to all of you and why I will never stop using Melaleuca Products!  Take Care-Joy Wright

Washing Your Hair May be Dangerous to Your Health

When taking a shower, it is doubtful the thought, “How is this shampoo affecting my nerves ?”  Though perhaps more people should pay attention to the products they are using on a daily basis, as some contain a potentially dangerous chemical, methylchloroisothiazolin (MIT), which may have detrimental effects on the nervous system.

While the purpose of MIT is to prevent bacteria from developing, researchers found that contact with it restricted growth of axons and dendrites of immature nerves found in rat brain cells. The rat studies also showed that chronic exposure to this chemical led to a malfunction in the way neurons communicate with one another. One researcher explained that direct exposure to high concentrations of MIT would irritate the skin because it can damage skin cells. Yet since the chemical only affects the cells it comes in contact with, there is no way the chemical can get into the bloodstream and go to the brain.

Based on their findings, researchers concluded that people working directly with MIT are the most at risk; however, additional tests still must be administered in order to determine if MIT is harmful to humans in the concentrations found in household products.

MIT Hideouts

  • Shampoo (Head and Shoulders, Suave, Clairol)
  • Pantene hair conditioner
  • Revlon hair color
  • Hand lotions
  • Paint

Read Dr. Mercola’s Comment below…..

Dr. Mercola’s Comment:

I’ve previously posted information on my site about the hidden, and often toxic, chemicals found in commonly used products such as cosmetics and household cleaners. And, contrary to what the study shows, it is important to recognize that whatever you spread on your skin has a VERY REAL chance of being absorbed into your blood stream and causing some serious damage in your body.

Antibacterial hand soap is another household item that poses many health risks. This is because, just as MIT is put in shampoos and hand lotions to prevent bacteria from forming, antibacterial soap contains an active ingredient known as triclosan. This antibacterial agent kills bacteria and inhibits bacterial growth; however, it also has been shown to kill human cells. Antibacterial ingredients can be found in some of the same products MIT is found in, such as:

  • Laundry detergents
  • Shampoos
  • Toothpastes
  • Body washes
  • Dish soaps

The reason so many consumers use products like these is because they have been marketed as an effective and necessary way to lower the risk of infection. However, many scientists fear that widespread use could lead to a strain of resistant bacteria, or “superbugs,” causing the ingredients to lose effectiveness for the times when they really are needed.

Scientists have also found that using antibacterial products apparently offers little protection against the most COMMON germs!

If you are concerned about the numerous toxic chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis, I strongly urge you to read:  Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call.  Author, Dr. Doris Rapp, does a thorough job of uncovering the many ways we are exposed to toxic chemicals and how they take a toll on our health and contribute to many chronic diseases.

Also, learn more about the wide-ranging use of MIT in common household products we take for granted by checking out this list, compiled by the National Institutes of Health.
